Salicylates, not a name that often comes up in casual conversation. They are naturally occurring chemicals found in many fruits and vegetables, that protect plants from disease and infection. They may also be made synthetically and are found in perfumes, cleaning products, toothpaste, medications (e.g. aspirin) and creams.

In sensitive people, salicylates may cause:

• Headaches
• Eczema, hives
• Digestive problems (cramps, bloating)
• Allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps
• Worsening asthma 
• Behavioural problems in children
• Sleep Disturbances
• Anxiety, depression
• Anaphylaxis (severe cases)

Why sensitivity?

Some people have a problem with processing large amounts of salicylates and an accumulation causes a reaction. Symptoms and severity vary between individuals.

How do we diagnose Salicylate Intolerance?

There is no actual test. An elimination diet is the only way to accurately identify intolerance but this should not be done without the guidance of a qualified health professional.

High Salicylate foods

• Fresh apricots, berries, dates, pineapple, sultanas, prunes, orange, grapes, guava
• Zucchini, chili, green olives, capsicum, radish, gherkins, broccoli, cucumber, tinned tomatoes, corn
• Almonds, peanuts, brazil nuts, pine nuts, pistachio, sesame seeds
• Honey, peppermint tea, wine, cordial, fruit and vegetable juices, tea, cider vinegars, most herbs and spices, yeast extracts

What to Do?

There are supplements that will help reduce salicylates. These include fish oil, probiotics, quercetin, vitamin C, and zinc to name a few.
