In its most basic form, play is a tool to learn and grow, develop your mind and body, build and foster relationships and to have fun. Many studies have validated the positive benefits of play, for children and adults. 

Simple, non-electronic play, it seems, promotes relaxation, stimulates imagination and improves problem-solving skills. It also benefits emotional, mental and physical well-being. It may also help us manage stress better and refresh both body and mind.

Recognition of the many benefits of play for adults has resulted in best-selling adult colouring books, adults-only ball pits and giant trampolines, adult play centres, and even work play time at some forward-thinking businesses.

Play can be physical or intellectual or both. Play can also be free! Hop on the see –saw with your children, throw a Frisbee with friends, make up a show with finger puppets (the first time I did this in the library at my nephew’s insistence, I was very self-conscious and slightly embarrassed; yet, I was secretly disappointed he didn’t ask me again the following week!).

You can play fetch with the dog or do science experiments with your child, play ping pong under the patio or Cluedo in the lounge. Play with structure, play with no structure, play with a goal or play with no goal - the crucial thing is to make sure you play some. The health benefits are undeniable, especially in this age of so much digital connectedness!

So, let’s put down that electronic device, go outside (or stay inside) and play!
