The eye is our second most complex organ, after our brain. In fact, the eye has the fastest muscle in our body! Hence, we say “in the blink of an eye” when something happen very quickly.

An I-phone X has a 12-megapixel camera. Our eye, if it were a camera, has 576 megapixels!  It makes sense to really look after this amazing piece of “equipment”.

Some simple things we can do include:

Wearing sunglasses – UV light not only hurts skin; it can hurt eyes as well, increasing your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration (the leading cause of blindness in Australia)

Eating a healthy, balanced diet which may reduce the risk of macular degeneration

Having regular eye checks (especially if you have diabetes). Even if you don’t need glasses, an eye check at the optometrist can pick up many serious eye conditions with no symptoms such as glaucoma, cataracts, melanoma, macular degeneration and undiagnosed diabetes.

(For more tips, check out the Health Direct website)

Our sight deteriorates as we age - eye muscles start to weaken after age 45 and we need more 3 times more light at age 60 than at age 20. These can be corrected and managed to reduce risk of falling over and other accidents. It also makes it easier to become aware if something is really wrong with our vision so we can get our eyes checked properly.

If you are concerned about changes in your vision, speak to a health professional. After all, we only have two eyes and it’s up to us to take good care of this prized possession!

Fun fact: An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain

Fun fact:  The human eyes can only see 3 colours (red, blue and green) but is able to see 500 shades of gray!
